The legal separation of the Thirteen states from Great Britain occurred when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been introduced in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia proclaiming the United States autonomous from Great Britain’s rule. The thirteen states were in a way that The northern
group was called New England and included New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. There were four Middle Colonies: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
The South had five colonies: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. After voting for independence Congress initiated its steps towards Declaration of independence which had been prepared by a committee of Five with Thomas Jefferson as its chief author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration,
finally approving it two days later on July 4.
